 n Dec. 17, a major exhibition called "Women's Art in China (1920 to 2010) opened at the Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum. The show, which runs through February 2011, looks at how female artists in China depicted themselves over the last century. The show is mostly about how Chinese women saw themselves during the 20th century; how they expressed their emotion, how their saw their own images, and how they created a narrative of their experience, the curators of the show say. Some of China's leading contemporary artists are in the show, such as Yu Hong and Xiang Jing. But the show has a wide selection of self-portraits from famous female artists in China from earlier periods, such as Qiu Ti, Pan Yuliang, Xu Jianbai, Yu Feng and Cai Weilian.
The works including paintings, sculpture and sketches. Many of the women created self-portraits. The curators say that through the decades women artists in China were naturally drawn to self-portraits, and while that practice largely ceased during the Cultural Revolution, when individualism was frowned upon, it returned after the country opened up in the 1970s.
