 he 40th edition of Art Basel takes place in Basel, Switzerland, from June 6,2009 to June 14, 2009. The event will feature nearly 300 top galleries and works by more than 2,500 artists. The show is considered the Olympics of the art world.
Five Chinese galleries were selected from a record number of more than 1,100 applications. They are: Boers-Li Gallery from Beijing, ShanghArt Gallery from Shanghai, Vitamin Creative Space from Guangzhou, Long March Space from Beijing and Taiwan Eslite Gallery. Participating Chinese artists include: Ai Weiwei, Huang Yongping, Ji Wenyu, Wang Guangyi, Wang Jianwei, Yan Pei-Ming, Yang Fudong, Zhang Enli and Zheng Guogu,etc. Meanwhile, Shanghai 55 gallery is the only Chinese mainland gallery to join in the VOLTA5.
The special exhibitions and public events of Art Basel include: Art Basel Conversations, Art Film, Art Lobby and Art on Stage. At the same time, 27 young emerging artists from 13 countries will also appear in Art Basel to hold their respectively solo show, Chinese artists Guo Fengyi( from Long March Space) is the only one from China to be part of these solo shows.
As the world’s leading international show for modern and contemporary works, Art Basel established a premier position in its 40-year development period. Despite the continuous financial crisis, co-directors Marc Spiegler and Annette Schönholzer expressed their confidence and optimism toward Art Basel 09 in some interviews.
