 u Jiang's solo exhibition, "Redemption of a Sunflower," is now at the Shanghai Art Museum. About 100 of his recent works, including oil paintings, water color, sculptures and video, are on display. This exhibition is large-scale and follows two other exhibitions of Xu Jiang's works at the National Art Museum of China and the Guangdong Museum of Art.
Xu Jiang was born in Fujian province in 1955. He is the president of the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, and he is also an important figure in the Chinese contemporary art scene. He has long been a member of the committee of the Shanghai Biennale and he has written several books on art. "Art Review" once chose him as one of the "Power 100" in Art.
Since 2003, Xu Jiang's woks has focused on sunflowers. They relate to his experience living in the countryside of Fujian province as a middle school teacher. Xu Jiang once said sunflowers are not always facing the sun, but "stands to one direction, where the sun rises."
"Redemption of a Sunflower Garden: New Works of Xu Jiang" is on exhibit from April 3 to April 25, 2009. Below are images and pictures from the exhibition:
