eginning March 18, Dubai will host Art Dubai 2009, the most anticipated art fair ever in Asia. 65 galleries from every corner of the world will gather together in its beach resort -- Madinat Jumeirah, a fascinating area in Dubai.
Located in Araby, Dubai has long been a dreamland for millionaires. The financial crisis does not affect Dubai’s enthusiasm for holding art fairs. Art Dubai 2009 will unveil the works of the recipients of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize. Three of the recipients are: Curator Carol Solomon and Artist Zoulikha Bouabdellah; Curator Cristiana Perella and Artist Kutluğ Ataman; Curator Leyla Fakhr and Artist Nazgol Ansarinia. They will receive a generous prize of a total of 1 million dollars.
Although not one of the Chinese galleries would be participating in this art fair, members from the Chinese galleries, auctions and art collectors would be visiting it. Moreover, Nobility Art Society is forming a team consisting of Chinese collectors to tour Dubai before the fair opens. Jerome Sans, the director of Ullens Contemporary Center for Art in Beijing, will be participating in Art Dubai’s Global Forum. A conversation targeted at “The Art of the Party” will take place among Jerome Sans, Simon de Pury, the owner of Christie’s and others.
John Martin, the director and co-founder of Art Dubai, is very much familiar with the art market in the Middle Eastern area. Art Dubai is becoming increasingly important in Asia. An estimate of 12,000 people visited the fair in 2008. Under these circumstances inflicted by the financial crisis, will Art Dubai perform even better this year? Let us wait and see.
