Yoko Ono--Fly
By ArtZineChina

oko Ono‘s first China solo exhibition is held in Ke Center for the Contemporary Arts in Shanghai on the 22th, November. Organized by the artist herself, the exhibition is an overview of Yoko Ono`s 50-year performances. 7 works are displayed on the exhibition. The name of the works are: Exit, Mommy is beautiful, Mend piece, Wish Trees, Onochord, Fly, Telephone piece and Blue room.

The work ONOCHORD is an opening event/ performance, the artist will on the top of a building with a searchlight. In EXIT, Yoko Ono reflects here on the human condition and the fragility of existence , on the uncertainty of regaining hope after the drama of death , and on the reclamation of anonymity . The title of the work seems to allude to the exit from life or to the abandonment of one’s being , to losing one’s proper name or the capacity to name things .

WISH TREES are always old trees , with long lives and deep roots and , if possible , flowers and fruits that sweeten the air with their fragrance . Yoko Ono asks that we , the audience , participate in this Wish Tree by desiring and wanting to desire , identifying our desires and daring to write them down on thin pieces of paper . We trust that they will come true if we tie them to the branches of the tree, thus letting our hope vibrate and flutter its wings(the “butterfly”effect).

Her conceptual photographic work Mommy is Beautiful, showed around the city of Liverpool, England during its Biennale, shows a woman’s breast and vagina, depicting the maternal aspects of the female body and touching upon the personal memories and social stereotypes projected onto these bodies.

Once John Lennon said about Yoko Ono that she is “the world’s most famous unknown artist: everybody knows her name, but nobody knows what she does.” This exhibition aims to present the achievement of this unique figure. It will last to December 12.
