Christie’s Autumn sales of Asian Contemporary Art in Hong Kong
By ArtZineChina

ong Kong – Christie's Autumn sales of Asian Contemporary Art will be held on Sunday, November 30th and Monday, December 1st at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre. The auction is being considered a key signal about whether the market for Asian contemporary art is still strong, since Hong Kong has been a major center for auction buhying. Christie's is putting up for sale some of the best-known artists of the 20th century, as well as rising stars from China, Japan, Korea, India and Pakistan.

The Evening Sale features over 30 works valued in excess of Asian Contemporary art. including Chinese artists like Cai Guo-Qiang, Fang Lijun, Liu Wei, Liu Ye, Tang Zhigang, Wang Guangyi, Yan Peiming, Yue Minjun, Zeng Fanzhi and Zhang Xiaogang.

Christie's says "highlighting the selection of Chinese Contemporary art offered this fall is a group of works from the collection of famed American filmmaker Oliver Stone. The pieces offered from his collection include prime works from Zhang Xiaogang, Liu Wei, Gu Wenda, and Tang Zhigang. Indeed, the focus of this selection of Mr. Stone's collection is on the early works that were instrumental in elevating the profile of these artists to an international audience. "

One of the most important works from the Stone collection is Zhang Xiaogang's Bloodline: Big Family No. 2, which Christie's calls "an important early work that is strong and representative of the famed Big Family series. Never before offered at auction, this work was included in the exhibition catalogue for the historic "Inside Out: New Chinese Art" exhibition curated by Gao Minglu and organized by the Asia Society Galleries and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. "

Also during the evening sales Oliver Stone is selling two works by Liu Wei, who Christie's says is "an artist who too explored the notion of family in his work. Swimmers '94 (estimate: HK$4,600,000-5,400,000 / US$589,700-692,300) and Revolutionary Family (estimate: HK$3,200,000-4,000,000 / US$410,300-512,800), are two important examples of the artist's early work that helped to launch his international career."

Christie's is also auctioning a Zeng Fanzhi's piece, "From the Masses, To the Masses," which Christie's calls "a pioneering work that pre-dates his famed Mask Series, and the first masterpiece he created upon his arrival to Beijing in 1993 (illustrated left, estimate upon request). In this painting one can begin to see the techniques that would later become Zeng's trademarks – most noticeably the dramatic rendition of flesh and muscle as a means for further exploring a character's hidden emotions."

There are also works by Cai Guoqiang, Yue Minjun, Wang Guangyi and Liu Ye that are considered classics. Christie's says that "among the most significant works by Yue offered this season is Backyard Pond (estimate: HK$8,000,000 – 12,000,000 / US$1,025,600 – 1,538,500)."

During the day sale, Christie's will auction 76 Chinese artists including the Taiwanese: artists such as Gu Wenda, Guo Jin, He Seng, Huang Yongping, Qi Zhilong, Song Yonghong, Xu Bing, Ye Yongqing, Zeng Hao, Zheng Guogu, Zhong Biao, Zhou Chunya and Zhu Wei.
